While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, a
woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar
and poured the perfume on his head.

Some of those present were saying indignantly to one
another, “Why this waste of perfume?
5
It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the
money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.
6
“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are
you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
7
The poor you will always have with you,
and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me.
8
She did what she
could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.
9
I tell you the truth,
wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in
memory of her.”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”

The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said,
“Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.

I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed
yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands,
and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.”

Jesus said
this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him,
“Follow me!”

Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was
the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going
to betray you?”)
21
When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”
22
Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You
must follow me.”

strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,

dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established
in love,

may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long
and high and deep is the love of Christ,

and to know this love that surpasses
knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Shepards & Angels

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at
night.

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them,
and they were terrified.

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news
of great joy that will be for all the people.

Today in the town of David a Savior has been
born to you; he is Christ

the Lord.
12
This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped
in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and
saying,

“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another,
“Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us
about.”

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.

When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about
this child,

and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

But Mary
treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

The shepherds returned,
glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they
had been told.
The Great King from Bethlehem

“THE GREAT KING FROM BETHLEHEM”
MATTHEW 2:4-6

When Herod had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law,
he asked them where the Christ was to be born.

“In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied,
“for this is what the prophet has written:

” ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.’”

2 But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
from ancient times.
3 Therefore Israel will be abandoned
until the time when she who is in labor gives birth
and the rest of his brothers return
to join the Israelites.
4 He will stand and shepherd his flock
in the strength of the LORD,
in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God.
And they will live securely, for then his greatness
will reach to the ends of the earth.

Why Humility?

“When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor,
for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited.

If so, the host who
invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this man your seat.’ Then, humiliated,
you will have to take the least important place.

But when you are invited, take the lowest
place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’
Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests.

For everyone who
exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
